FootballScoop is proud to announce that Vince Kehres (Mount Union) is the 2010 FootballScoop Division III Coordinator of the Year presented by SpeedTracs.
Under defensive coordinator Vince Kehres, the Mount Union defense led the nation in scoring defense (8.9 PPG) and went 14-0 before losing to Wisconsin-Whitewater in the national championship game. During the season, the defense held five opponents scoreless and they had a 12 game stretch during which their opponents only scored 61 points.
The Purple Raiders defense only allowed 212 yards per game (#2 nationally) and they gained 47 turnovers (#1 in the nation). Further, they led the nation in passing efficiency defense, allowed opponents to convert only 28% of third-downs opportunities, while amassing 48 sacks.
Mount Union head coach Larry Kehres told FootballScoop, "Under Vince's leadership, an inexperienced defense matured into a unit which led our team into the National title game."
Mount Union won the Ohio Athletic Conference and their first 14 games this season before losing to Wisconsin-Whitewater in the National Championship.
The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by SpeedTracs are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Kehres, Chip Knapp - Wesley College and Jimmy Miller - Bethel College) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. A panel of coaches including previous recipients determined the 2010 winners.
Previous winners of the Division III Coordinator of the Year award are Glen Fowles (Willamette, 2008) and Jim Zebrowski (Wisconsin-Whitewater, 2009).
